Old Houses – Additions

Additions are fun they make what you have even better. So when we took off the crooked icky addition that was on the back of the house just before we lifted it back in our first year a lot of thought went into what we would do back there. As we gutted the top floors of our house in prep for the new foundation the following spring we new that we wanted something nice to sort of go in its place we played around with a lot of ideas and came up with extending the foundation in the back of the house where the present kitchen was and make a sort of mudroom / laundry / canning area because we planned on growing lots and wanted a nice spot to do all the messy work without making the big mess in the kitchen.

As time has gone by of course its given us a really good chance to think about the practicality of ideas we had. What good layouts for our house might be better and how it could best suit our needs. The addition is still going to be as we originally thought with just a few minor changes.

comig soon …. bird viewing

The main entrance in and out of the house will be the nice big door in the addition on the side of the house. The driveway is on that side and it just makes practical sense. My laundry area will still be there but set up in a different way so that we can have a nice closet to put coats and boots and shoes in. We have a nice window that looks out on the west side of the house(driveway side) and I think it will end up being a favorite spot to see birds. It will also house a rather large sized preserve / canning wall which I can’t wait to have as well as a fair sized counter with sink and a two piece bathroom. This room will have the potential to become my certified kitchen for future needs so its kind of neat how in not even realizing when we moved the kitchen area how that was going to be practical.

We haven’t rushed through our renos, we are doing it as and when we can which was always the plan. Which I think has worked out well, yes it takes longer to do what you want but it also keeps us out of debt and really helps making rash plans. Our plans are well thought out and are even better then when we first got here.

It’s going to be really cool when we have our ideas not only on paper but in real time.

So part of the addition renos mean that for a short time we will most likely relocate our kitchen space in there so that we can entirely gut the main floor. I see a busy winter coming up but it will be a really good time to do that. It also means packing away some non essentials, again for a time but in the end it means I will finally be unpacking all my other stuff that I have not been able too as of yet.

We really look forward to hosting meals at our place again like we use to back home in Ontario… So look out friends and family our awesome home cooked good eats are coming agian…. I see movie nights, coffee nights, and game night back on the agenda. Yeah

So you will see from the pictures which I’m sure will answer the age long question we always get about the siding on the house. NO we are not going to put on vinyl siding…. We are going to replace the cedar shingles that once graced this beautiful old manse and I do believe with all the fish flip flopping around we have honestly come up with a final colour scheme for the outside of the house.

Oh yes, not only was the exterior colours hard too choose but a lot of thought went into the exterior trim options as well. All of it is gonna look so nice. I’m sure when Rusty is working on the front of the house we will get a few people popping by again to see and chat about the changes.

Making sure the shingles go on nice and straight
Almost there:)
